ROUTE-SETTING PHILOSOPHY

Climbing MUST be fun!
That’s the bottom line as our route-setting mantra here at Greater Heights. We believe that everyone, even a total newbie off the streets, should be seduced, challenged and not shut down by any routes.

Intentionality
Routes should be set with the intended recipient in mind – The most hardcore gyms should also cater to beginners!

Educational
Being shut down by a route because of your grip strength learns you nothing.  Our routes emphasize technique in the form of movement and sequences, not brutal pulling power.

Safety
Even at World Cup standards, routes are designed so the climber will get to the 2nd or 3rd with ease.  Our routes reflect our awareness of the dangers of falling before the 1st or 2nd clip, and we work to ensure that clipping points are safe.  When setting boulder problems, we try to minimize awkward landings.

Challenging/Grading
Routes are designed to challenge and not shut down climbers.  Our routes are set to “pump out” climbers, and not to “spit” them off. Gradings are subjective to height/reach and personal weaknesses.  Climbers good on slopers may find an easy but crimpy route/problem hard, and vice versa.

Fun
Because at the end of the day, we just want to enjoy the movements, and find those elusive moments when the mind and body are working in unison.

Preparation for the real thing
Because all that training/climbing on plastic, is but a rehearsal for the real thing.  And the fitter one is, the more enjoyable it will be on natural rocks.

Travel

All the training on plastic are but a preparation for the real climbing out there! Due to the unfortunate lack of rocks in Singapore, many Singaporean climbers first encounter with climbing is usually in an artificial setting, climbing or bouldering on wood or plastic. This, we hope to change, by organising climbing trips to great climbing destinations such as Krabi (Thailand), YangShuo (China), or Ceuse (France).

We understand the fear in stepping out from the safe barrier of plastic climbing, and we would like to ensure that your transition to climbing and adventure on natural rocks is as fun, simple and safe as possible.

Suz and I are both climbing instructors and seasoned travelers who have been to climbing places in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia and of course, Krabi.  From November 2006 till July 2008, we embarked on a 20 month climbing journey through New Zealand, Australia, Switzerland, France, Spain, Morocco, Germany, Slovenia, Italy and Czech Republic!

Climbing Volumes

Volumes are changing the way we climb in boulder gyms and in competitions. Moves that were never possible on flat climbing walls are now the staple. Eg, compression problems; heel-hooking on the overhang; mantling; and many more. If you have an old gym and is tired of the angles, affixing volumes will be the best choice ever!

Our volumes are made of fibre-glass, which makes it light, but strong. Secured by screws, it is only slightly harder to shift around the wall when you get tired of it. Screw-on holds can also be affixed onto the volumes.
